Though it’s still cold, it’s getting that time of year to start thinking about gardens. Last week my 90 year old cousin Thomas Routh and his wife Lula Mae were out in their greenhouses planting and transplanting tomatos and other vegetable plants. Thomas and Lula Mae sell plants, but they also grow a large garden and sell produce through the summer at the farmer’s market in Asheboro.

Portraits of Chram Rode and his wife Broih Fnu, a Montagnard couple originally from Viet Nam, now living in Greensboro, North Carolina. For the past two seasons they have been working for the Goat Lady CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) garden near my home in Grays Chapel.

Image from the backyard. My wife likes to mix sunflowers among the vegetables in our garden for the color and for the benefit of the local bird population.
