Snow in Bryce Canyon

A lot of the time people equate red rock and Utah with hot and dry, but that area does indeed have winter. In the image above, a winter snow has dusted the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon and adds something extra to the famous formations. Hot and dry. The morning after these were shot, the temperature was -5 degrees F. But it was a dry cold.

North Carolina Mountain Color

October is a month of change in North Carolina. Starting in the mountains and moving east, Mother Nature makes the transition from summer to winter with her brilliant displays of color. I think this is my favorite time of year, although I do dread to see the cold and gray of winter coming. This image is of Yellowstone Falls, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville. It’s located in the Black Balsam/Graveyard Fields area of Pisgah National Forest, one of the wildest and most beautiful spots in the Blue Ridge.

Kidd’s Mill

The rock dam at Kidd’s Mill on Sandy Creek is a local landmark here in Grays Chapel, North Carolina, but it has a very special connection for me. My great-great grandfather McMasters once owned the mill there and then sold it to my great-great grandfather Routh, who rebuilt the dam and ground flour and feed for several years. Unfortunately, the mill itself is long gone, though I do remember going inside it to have feed ground when I was a youngster. The dam is still in pretty good shape and presents an idyllic scene on a recent snowy day.
